Objective

Participants will have the opportunity to gain experience of interpretation of VSP data using worked examples.

Description

This course provides an introduction to the use of borehole seismic data, focusing on the recording, processing and interpretation of Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) data. The importance of good survey design is emphasized. In order to acquire data that satisfies a clearly defined geophysical objective, it is necessary to use ray trace modeling to identify which of the various types of VSP survey will give the appropriate subsurface coverage.

To this end, the course will include a description and demonstration of current ray trace modeling capabilities.

Data acquisition equipment and methods, including real-time QC of field data, are discussed. Current techniques, including the theory behind VSP data processing, are fully described, together with the applications of VSP data, including case studies from around the world from a variety of different structural scenarios.

Topics include
Planning and Design of Borehole Seismic Surveys; Recording Equipment; Data Acquisition Methods; Processing Routes; Applications and Case Studies; Interpretation (worked examples)

Who should attend
Entry-level geophysicists and interpreters with little or no previous knowledge of VSP and who want to understand clearly how to make best use of borehole seismic data.
